La
Gringa is located at the North end of Bahia de los Angeles.
It is a popular camping spot especially for fishermen
as it is a short run over to Smith Island and other
prime fishing areas.
At
present, there is still a fence that runs parallel to
the beach along much of the La Gringa area. This
is due to an ownership dispute but camping is still
permitted and you can still access the beaches.
You
will notice a white motorhome with some fencing supplies
stored around it. This is where the fellow who
looks after things out there is located. As of
Feb. 10th, 2007 when I spoke with him directly, camping
was $5 per night per vehicle. Plan on being totally
self contained when camping.
There
are many dirt tracks leading to a variety of locations
at La Gringa and beyond. Take it slow and careful
and enjoy the scenery too!
To
get there, follow the signs in town for La Gringa. The
paved portion of the road will end right about at the
Military installation. From that point on, it's
rough going with some severe washboard. Air down,
and take it easy on your way out. There is a long
gravel bar with a steep sloping beach that many folks
like to camp at. If you follow the roads over
the hills to the North, there are other very nice, more
remote campsites.
It's
a beautiful spot and well worth traveling the washboard
road to get there..
