Scorpions
are very, very common here in Bahia. During
the day you'll find them hiding in a dark, damp, covered
place such as under a water barrel where I found the
scorpion you see above. On the beaches, they can
be found in the brush on the dunes and come will come
out at night. When camping,
it's a good idea to get your sleeping arrangments up
off the ground as much as possible. Don't leave
shoes or clothes on the ground and shake them out well
before
putting them on. You'll also find the smaller
"bark" scorpions in firewood and especially
under the bark of fallen ocotillo. Use caution
when gathering firewood
"I
just got stung, what do I do?": First thing
is to remain calm. Although scorpion stings can
be dangerous to the very young and the elderly in some
cases, it's generally no worse than a bee sting. If
you are allergic to bees it is best to carry the appropriate
medications with you when you travel. Avoid alcohol,
and remember stay calm and cool. Lie down and
rest and take it easy, you'll be ok!
